Grammarly’s Apps…Grammarly Ums…
I set up the Grammarly desktop app on my Windows 10 device and had no concerns checking in to my account. The app looks terrific and the design is extremely functional; I particularly like the side panel’s minimalist icons and dark accents. Users can select between making up text directly in an editor and importing an existing file.
If you simply paste and copy text from a Word file into the Grammarly app, Grammarly says it just retains italic and bold format, links, headers, and lists. In testing, I found that it also kept highlighted text. If you wish to keep the complete format of the text (including paragraph spacing), use the import tool to include the document. You will not see any formatted text while you work in the Grammarly editor, however the file maintains all of the initial formatting whenever you export it.
Given that the editor now fortunately includes formatting tools such as for bold, italics, underlines, links, headings, and lists (both bulleted and numbered), you could simply compose directly in the Grammarly app. Nevertheless, it’s likely easier to keep writing in Word or Google Docs and use the dedicated Grammarly tools for those platforms. Within a document, the right side of the window homes tabs for spelling and grammar errors, premium composing checks, a plagiarism checker, a human proofreader alternative, and a total writing score based on these elements. As discussed previously, the writing score is useful for getting a fast check of your writing progress and how much revising you have left.
2 other features readily available are Goals and Performance. Goals launches whenever you import a new file; it helps Grammarly adjust its edits based upon the context of your writing. For instance, you can define your intent (notify, describe, convince, tell a story), style, audience, and emotion. Premium users can select in between different writing domains, including Academic, Organization, and Creative. The Performance popup reveals you general data such as word count and reading time, in addition to vocabulary and readability metrics. These metrics are determined based upon comparison with other Grammarly users and the Readability rating is based upon the Flesch reading-ease test. Both additions make Grammarly better at a higher level than that of easy error checking.
However, I still use Grammarly on a regular basis to proofread whatever I publish on this blog. I have a pretty good grasp on grammar and English rules already, but it’s unexpected how typos and little errors can sneak into anyone’s writing.
So what is Grammarly? Is it worth it? And can it change a human proofreader or editor?
I address these concerns and more in my Grammarly review listed below.
This review is a big one as I wished to be as thorough as I could. Utilize the table of contents to skip to areas that interest you most if you’re pushed for time.
